The approach to data centre design and approval by communities involved can be enhanced by requiring a phased design and a build plan that focuses on the joint benefit to the data centre operators and the residents of the host community.
Phase 1
Design the initial size of the data centre based on the renewable energy available to power the facility.
Determine the amount of data centre heat recovery that can be used by residential, recreational, and industrial clients in the area.
Determine the noise reduction technology for the first data centre module.
Approve initial data centre module for construction sized by available renewable power, heat recovery users and noise reduction capability.
Phase 2
Add another data centre module when additional renewable power is available.
Add additional residential, recreational, and industrial users of data centre heat recovery.
Design noise reduction technology for the additional site.
Connect the expansion facility to existing facilities with high speed optical links.
Phase 3 and more
Repeat Phase 2 contingent upon public utilities board approval.
The Data Centre industry and government leaders may have better success in acceptance of these projects by adopting a phased modular development that is designed to provide benefits to both the data centre and the public throughout the life of the project.
